A three-legged dog was a “great mom to her puppies” — and now, she needs a home of her own.
“Nema is a very loving & affectionate dog who would just love to sit and talk with you about your day,” a South Carolina animal shelter wrote March 2 on Facebook. “While she is missing a front leg due to an unfortunate birth defect, her quality of life is not (affected).”
The 5-year-old mama dog waits for a second chance after she arrived at the Spartanburg Humane Society in December, the shelter wrote in an online adoption profile and email to McClatchy News.
“She came in with a deformed front leg, a litter of 6 puppies, and heartworms....,” the shelter wrote. “The puppies were still feeding off mama when they came in but are now big enough to be on their own.”
Nema, who had been picked up as a stray, was one of 12 dogs seized at the time. As of March 4, three puppies from the group — Grace, Jeremiah and Victor — were available for adoption.
Meanwhile, Nema has become known for her friendliness at the shelter. The mixed-breed dog will need a “mellow” home environment as she receives heartworm treatment.
“She loves meeting new friends and being the center of attention,” the humane society wrote. “She has been to multiple events outside of the shelter and has a blast! Because of the heartworms, we haven’t evaluated her in our playgroups yet, but she was a great mom to her puppies, and we believe she will do well once she is healthy enough to play in the yard.”
As of March 5, the shelter’s website still listed Nema among the dogs in need of new owners. Details about the facility’s adoption process can be found at spartanburghumane.org.
