Crash blocks traffic on major highway in the Midlands during commute

Traffic was backed up on a major interstate running through the Midlands because of a crash Monday, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said.

Drivers making the morning commute to Columbia had to deal with traffic jams and delays.

The collision occurred at about 9 a.m. on Interstate 26, SCDOT said on Twitter. One westbound lane was closed after the crash, according to the tweet.

The wreck was reported near Exit 101A, the juncture with U.S. 76 and Broad River Road, SCDOT said. That is in Richland County, approaching a busy stretch of the highway near exits for Lake Murray and Harbison boulevards.

About 30 minutes after the crash was reported, SCDOT said all lanes on I-26 had reopened, and the road was clear by 9:39 a.m.

Information on the number of vehicles involved in the collision, or any injuries, was not available.
