Columbia man killed after moped crashed into SUV identified by Richland Co. coroner

A Columbia man died days after crashing a moped into the back of an SUV on a busy road, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Sunday.

James G. Campbell was identified as the moped rider who died Saturday at Prisma Health Richland Hospital, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said in a news release.

The 49-year-old Fairhaven Drive resident was involved in a two-vehicle collision that occurred at about 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16, Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell said.

Campbell was riding a 2008 moped east on Broad River Road, near Longcreek Drive when it made contact with the back of a 2016 Ford Expedition, according to Tidwell. That is in the St. Andrews area, near Broad River Road’s junction with Interstate 20, at Exit 65.

Campbell was not wearing a helmet and he was taken to the Richland County hospital, Highway Patrol reported.

After six days in the hospital, Campbell died, according to Tidwell.

His cause of death was the result of blunt head trauma, Watts said.

Two people were in the SUV during the wreck, but neither was injured and both were wearing seat belts, Tidwell said.

Information on possible criminal charges was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.
