One person killed after driving across interstate in Richland County, SC cops say
One person died Monday morning in a single-vehicle crash on a Richland County stretch of a major interstate, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The collision occurred just before 2:30 a.m. on Interstate 77, at the 22 mile marker, Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell said. That is near the Killian Road exit, heading to Blythewood.
The driver of a 2020 BMW 330i was heading north on I-77 when the car crossed the median into southbound lanes and continued veering left before running off the road, according to Tidwell.
The car hit a guard rail before crashing into a ditch, Highway Patrol reported.
The driver was wearing a seat belt and was taken to an area hospital before dying, Tidwell said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the BMW driver after notifying the next of kin.
No one else was in the car, and no other injuries were reported in the collision.
Information was not available that the heavy rain or wind affecting the Midlands played any role in the wreck.
The wreck remains under investigation by Highway Patrol.
As of Dec. 22, 959 people have died on South Carolina roads this year in wrecks, according to the Department of Public Safety.
