Columbia man killed walking across road, Richland County Coroner says

One person is dead following a Saturday night collision on a busy Richland County road, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

A pedestrian was killed in a crash while attempting to cross U.S. 21, on a stretch of the highway in Columbia also known as Wilson Boulevard, Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said.

Patrick Lydell Patterson was identified as the person killed in the collision, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said in a news release.

The 47-year-old Columbia resident died at the scene after suffering blunt trauma of the head and neck, according to the coroner’s office.

The wreck occurred just after 7 p.m. near the intersection of the highway and McLeod Road, according to Southern. That’s close to the junction with Interstate 20 at Exit 71 in a densely packed area with retail businesses and restaurants, including Red Rooster Sports Bar and Grill as well as a McDonald’s.

Patterson was walking across U.S. 21 when hit by a 2012 Nissan Maxima that was heading north on the highway, Southern said.

It was dark outside when the crash occurred, as the sun had set in Columbia at 5:28 p.m., according to timeanddate.com.

While Patterson was killed, the driver of the Nissan was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the collision, Highway Patrol reported.

Information on any possible criminal charges was not available, but the death is being investigated by Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.
