Crashed camper blocks all traffic heading to Columbia on interstate, SC cops say
Drivers heading to Columbia on a major interstate were stuck in traffic Wednesday morning after a camper overturned, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
All of the westbound lanes on Interstate 26 were blocked near the 130 mile marker, according to Trooper Tyler Tidwell. That’s just outside of Lexington County, near the junction with U.S. 21.
Injuries were reported by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, but information on the number of people hurt and their conditions was not available.
The camper wrecked shortly after Tidwell said a tractor trailer truck jackknifed at the 132 mile marker of I-26. That crash happened at about 10:30 a.m., the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.
No injuries were reported in that collision by DPS.
Vehicles were backed up for miles on I-26, traffic cameras showed.
Information on what caused the collisions was not available, but it has been a rainy day and flood watches have been issued for much of the Midlands.
There was no word on how long it would take to clear the interstate, but Tidwell said a tow truck was en route for the camper. At about 1 p.m., SCDOT reported the lanes of I-26 had reopened.
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
