Crash near Malfunction Junction blocks traffic on interstate going to Columbia
Traffic was backed up on an interstate heading to Columbia following a collision in the area called Malfunction Junction, one of several crashes reported on Midlands roads on a rainy Thursday morning.
Drivers on the morning commute were delayed after multiple eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 were blocked following a collision, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.
The wreck happened just before 9 a.m., near Exit 106, according to the tweet. That’s the exit for St. Andrews Road, in the area where I-26 converges with other highways,
No injuries were reported in the crash, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Information on what caused the collision, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available.
Traffic cameras showed cars backed up for at least three miles as they were diverted into an open lane on I-26.
The lanes on I-26 reopened at about 10:45 a.m., SCDOT tweeted.
Since 5:30 a.m., SCDOT reported two additional collisions on I-26, as well as four on Interstate 20, two on S.C. 126 and one on Interstate 77 — all in the Midlands. The Department of Public Safety reported at least six more crashes on roads other than highways, some with injuries.
