Man killed after being hit by two cars on busy road near highway, Columbia police say
A pedestrian was killed overnight after being hit by two vehicles near the intersection of a major highway and a busy road, the Columbia Police Department said Wednesday.
The crash happened at about 9:30 p.m. on Clemson Road, in the area of Exit 80 on Interstate 20, police said. That area, near Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, has no street lighting and is densely packed with restaurants and businesses.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the victim after notifying the man’s family. According to an autopsy, the man died from blunt force trauma to the body.
No other injuries were reported.
Police said the man was unlawfully in Clemson Road, wearing “dark, non-reflective clothing” while heading west, when the collisions happened. The first vehicle stayed on the scene while the second drove off, according to police.
Investigators are looking for information on that vehicle and driver.
There was no word on possible criminal charges, but the death is being investigated by police and the coroner’s office. Police said officers are trying to get surveillance footage from the area.
Prior to this collision, 528 people have died on South Carolina roads this year, including 84 pedestrians, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
