Crash causes injuries, blocks interstate heading toward Columbia
A Wednesday morning crash blocked a section of a major highway headed toward Columbia and caused injuries.
The collision happened at about 9 a.m. on Interstate 20, near the area called Malfunction Junction, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
All of the westbound lanes on I-20 were blocked at Exit 63, SCDOT reported. That’s the Bush River Road exit, close to the junction with Interstate 26 in Lexington County.
Injuries were reported in the crash, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Information on the number of people hurt, and their conditions, was not available.
There was no word on what caused the wreck, or the number of vehicles involved.
Traffic cameras showed vehicles backed up on I-20 as emergency responders worked to clear the road. South Carolina Highway Patrol urged drivers to avoid the area if possible, and to expect delays.
Several vehicles were pulled to the right shoulder of I-20, just beyond the exit, as vehicles began flowing through the highway again at about 9:50 a.m., traffic cameras showed.
