Midlands man killed in motorcycle crash with SUV, coroner says
A Midlands man was killed Tuesday when he crashed a motorcycle into the side of an SUV, the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office said.
Steven C. Slaughter was identified as the man killed in the wreck, Coroner David West said in a news release.
The collision happened at about 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of S.C. 34 (Ridgeway Road) and Wildwood Lane, said Master Trooper David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s near Lugoff-Elgin High School, about 30 miles northeast of Columbia.
The 67-year-old Camden resident was heading east on S.C. 34 on a 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle when the collision occurred, Jones said. A 2008 Honda was traveling in the opposite direction and was making a left turn onto Wildwood Lane when the motorcycle smashed into the passenger side of the SUV, according to Jones.
Slaughter, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike and died on the scene, West said. The coroner called the crash an accident.
The driver of the Honda was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, according to Jones.
After a 911 call was made, Kershaw County EMS and the Lugoff Fire Department responded to the collision, according to West.
The crash continues to be investigated by Highway Patrol.
Through Tuesday, 62 motorcycle riders have been killed on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. This is the third fatal crash in Kershaw County this year, and first involving a motorcycle, according to DPS.
