Pedestrian killed in crash on busy Columbia road, South Carolina Highway Patrol says
One person was killed in a late night collision on a busy Columbia road, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Thursday morning.
A pedestrian died after being hit at about 11:15 p.m. while walking across Two Notch Road, Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell said.
Tidwell said the crash happened near the intersection with Maingate Drive, less than two miles from the junction of U.S. 1/Two Notch Road and Interstate 77.
A 2018 Dodge Challenger was heading north on Two Notch when the collision occurred, according to Tidwell.
The pedestrian was taken to a Prisma Health hospital in Richland County, where the person died, Tidwell said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the pedestrian after performing an autopsy and notifying the next of kin.
The driver of the Dodge was wearing a seat belt and was not hurt, according to Tidwell. No other injuries were reported.
Information on possible criminal charges was not available, as the collision is investigated by Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.
Through Wednesday afternoon, 712 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those, 117 were pedestrians, DPS data shows.
A week ago, two people were killed in Richland County while walking away from one crash when they were hit by an SUV on Interstate 26.
This was at least the 34th person killed in a Richland County crash in 2020, and the ninth pedestrian, according to DPS.
