Man in wheelchair killed while crossing SC road identified by coroner
The man who was killed while crossing a Midlands road in a motorized wheelchair was identified by the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office Monday.
James A. Shuler died Saturday, Coroner Samuetta Marshall said in a news release. The 74-year-old Orangeburg resident’s death was called accidental by Marshall.
At about 5:40 p.m., Shuler was hit by two vehicles while attempting to cross S.C. 33/Russell Street, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s in the Brookdale area, about a mile from the campus of South Carolina State University.
The cars were a 2017 Toyota Corolla and a 2016 Hyundai sedan, both driving north on S.C. 33, the Highway Patrol reported. The drivers were not injured, according to Highway Patrol.
Although Shuler’s manner of death was determined, the crashes continue to be investigated by Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.
Through Sunday, 1,048 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2021, including 165 pedestrians, state Department of Public Safety data shows.
At least 42 people have been killed in Orangeburg County crashes in 2021, and six involved pedestrians, DPS reported.
