Driver killed when SUV crashes, flips over in Midlands road, SC Highway Patrol says
One person was killed when an SUV flipped over on a Midlands road Monday night, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
Shunolon Antwan Battle died in the crash, Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece said Tuesday. The 39-year-old Newberry resident died at the scene, according to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 6:10 p.m. on a section of U.S. 76 near the intersection with Jalapa Road in Newberry County, according to Ridgeway. That’s near Exit 66 on Interstate 26.
Battle was driving a 1998 Jeep SUV east on U.S. 76, when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road, Ridgeway said.
He overcorrected, and the SUV lurched back onto the road and crossed the center line when it flipped over, according to Ridgeway.
No other injuries were reported by Highway Patrol.
Battle wore a seat belt, according to the coroner’s office. An autopsy has been scheduled.
Information about what originally caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
