Driver dies after vehicle hits fence and flips over, SC Highway Patrol said
One person died a week after being in a crash on a South Carolina road, the state Highway Patrol said Wednesday.
The single-vehicle collision happened in Barnwell County on Feb. 24, at about 8:05 p.m., according to Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell.
A 2008 GMC was driving north on Osborn Road, near the intersection with St. Paul Drive, when the vehicle crossed the center line, Tidwell said.
The GMC continued continued to run off the left side of the road and crashed into a fence before flipping over, Tidwell said.
The driver was taken to an area hospital and died days later, according to Tidwell.
The Barnwell County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin.
Tidwell said the driver was the only occupant and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver wore a seat belt.
Information about what caused the vehicle to veer off the road was not available, but it remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Through Tuesday, 126 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,149 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
This is the first deadly crash reported in Barnwell County in 2022, while eight people died in collisions there last year, according to DPS.
