Crash on highway in Columbia blocks traffic, causes injuries
A late morning crash on a highway running through Columbia caused a traffic jam and injuries, South Carolina officials said Wednesday.
An exit ramp on Interstate 77 was blocked following the collision that happened at about 11:35 a.m., according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
The ramp was for Exit 9A and 9B, which are the connections to U.S. 76/U.S. 378/Garners Ferry Road and S.C. 262/Leesburg Road, SCDOT said. That’s near the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Richland County.
Injuries were reported in the crash, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. Information on the number of people hurt and the amount of vehicles involved was not available.
There was no word on the cause of the collision.
Vehicles were backed up about a mile on I-77, traffic cameras showed.
Information on when the lanes on I-77 would reopen and the scene would be cleared was not available. Drivers might want to avoid the area if possible, otherwise should expect delays.
