Motorcycle rider killed in Lexington County crash with pickup truck, SC cops say
A Lexington man was killed Monday night when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a pickup truck, South Carolina officials said.
Shane Lee Baxley is the motorcycle rider who died in the accident, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Tuesday. The 44-year-old was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene, according to Fisher.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:20 p.m., at the intersection of Jim Spence Road and Pat Road in Lexington, said Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s in the area between S.C. 6 and S.C. 302, about 4 miles from Lexington County Airport.
Baxley was driving a 2004 Kawasaki motorcycle east on Jim Spence Road, according to Tidwell. A northbound 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck was turning left onto Jim Spence Road and was hit by the motorcycle, Tidwell said.
The pickup driver was not hurt and remained at the scene, according to Fisher.
No other injuries were reported.
The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision.
“Motorcycles are Everywhere but they are small, easily obscured by other vehicles and roadside structures, and sometimes hard to see,” the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday while promoting Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. “Automobile drivers should watch closely for motorcycles in all directions at intersections. Avoid turns — especially left-hand turns across oncoming traffic — on yellow lights in case an approaching motorcycle is coming through the intersection.”
Through Monday, 330 people have died in crashes in South Carolina in 2022, including 38 motorcycle riders, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
At least 11 people have been killed in Lexington County crashes in 2022, and this is the fourth that involved a motorcycle, DPS reported.
In 2021, 159 motorcycle riders were among the 1,192 people who had died on South Carolina roads, according to DPS. Five of last year’s 57 deadly crashes in Lexington County involved a motorcycle, DPS data shows.
