Two drivers killed when SUV crashes into truck on South Carolina road, cops say
Two people were killed Saturday in a head-on crash involving an SUV and pickup truck, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 4:30 p.m. in Colleton County, said Master Trooper Brian Lee.
A 2000 GMC SUV was driving west on S.C. 64 when it crossed left of the center line near the intersection with U.S. 15, according to Lee. That’s in the Canady’s area, near Interstate 95.
The SUV collided with an eastbound 1990 Ford F-150 pickup truck, Lee said.
The drivers of both vehicles died, according to Lee. There was no word if the drivers died at the scene, or if they were taken to an area hospital.
The Colleton County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the drivers after notifying the next of kin.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if any of the people involved in the wreck wore seat belts.
Information about what caused the SUV to veer into oncoming traffic was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through last Sunday, 650 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 18 people have died in Colleton County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 19 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.
