Crash causes injuries and traffic jam on highway near downtown Columbia
A crash caused multiple lanes on a major interstate near downtown Columbia to be closed Thursday, creating a traffic jam for drivers.
All southbound lanes near Exit 5 on Interstate 77 were blocked by the crash that happened at about 9:45 a.m., according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. That’s the junction with Bluff Road in Richland County.
Information about the cause of the collision, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available.
Injuries were reported in the wreck, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. There was no word on the number of people hurt or their conditions.
Vehicles were backed up on I-77, and traffic cameras showed there were no vehicles in the southbound lanes for at least two miles down the highway ahead of the crash.
All of the lanes had reopened at about 10:15 a.m., according to SCDOT. There was no word on when the scene would be cleared. Drivers are asked to be patient and use caution.
