One driver killed, another flown to a Richland County hospital after crash, cops say

One driver was killed and another was flown to an area hospital Tuesday following a head-on crash between a car and an SUV on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 2:30 p.m. in Clarendon County, said Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell.

A 1993 Saturn SL2 was driving north on MW Rickenbaker Road near the Manning area when it crossed the center line and hit a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV that was heading in the opposite direction, according to Tidwell.

The Saturn driver died at the scene, Tidwell said.

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the Saturn driver after notifying the next of kin.

The Mitsubishi driver was airlifted to Prisma Health Richland hospital, according to Tidwell. Further information on the SUV driver’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if anyone involved in the crash wore a seat belt.
