Florida man killed when ejected from car in crash on highway in SC, coroner says

One person was killed over the weekend when a car ran off Interstate 77 then crashed and flipped over, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Lonnie James Glover, Jr., a 27-year-old Tampa, Florida resident, died in the accident, Fairfield County Coroner Chris Hill said Monday.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9 p.m. Saturday in Fairfield County, Lance Cpl. Nick Pye said.

A 2004 Chrysler sedan was driving north on I-77 when it ran off the right side of the highway near the 50 mile marker, according to Pye. That’s just beyond Exit 48, which is the junction with S.C. 200.

The car then hit a ditch before crashing into a tree and overturning, Pye said.

Glover was ejected from the car during the crash, according to Hill.

There was no word if Glover wore a seat belt.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

More than 766 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least six people have died in Fairfield County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 10 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.
