Columbia man killed in crash on Lexington County road, coroner says
A Columbia man died after he was hit by a car, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said Sunday.
On Friday, Daniel Nelson Gibbons III was crossing Jamil Road when he was hit by a vehicle, Coroner Margaret Fisher said. The 68-year-old pedestrian was taken to an area hospital where he died from injuries he sustained in the collision, according to Fisher.
The collision happened at about 6 p.m. in the area of Columbia that’s located in Lexington County, Master Trooper Brandon Bolt said.
Gibbons was walking west across Jamil Road when he was hit by a 2009 Cadillac sedan that was driving north, according to Bolt.
Bolt said the Cadillac driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
The collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
This is the second deadly crash involving a pedestrian on a Lexington County road in just over a week.
On Dec. 2, a 70-year-old Lexington woman died after being hit by a vehicle while crossing Platt Springs Road, near the intersection with Highland Drive.
Through Dec. 4, at least 971 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2022, including 150 pedestrians, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 41 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2022, and five were pedestrians, DPS reported. Last year, 57 deaths were reported in the county, according to DPS data.
