Person on side of road after crash killed when hit by another vehicle, SC cops say
A person who survived one crash Sunday was killed in a second collision on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision happened at about 5:55 p.m. on S.C. 4 in Orangeburg County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.
The person was lying on the shoulder of the road following the initial crash near the intersection with Zeigler Street, according to Bolt.
Then a 1998 Toyota Camry that was driving east on S.C. 4 ran off the right side of the road, first crashing into an unoccupied vehicle before hitting the person on the shoulder of the road, Bolt said.
The person died at the scene, according to Bolt.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim.
Bolt said the Toyota driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
Information about the initial crash and how the victim ended up on the side of the road was not available. There was no word what caused the Toyota to veer off the road, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Dec. 4, at least 971 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2022, including 150 pedestrians, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 43 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2022, and five were pedestrians, DPS reported. Last year, 46 deaths were reported in the county, according to DPS data.
