Driver killed crashing into tractor trailer on Midlands road, SC cops say

One person was killed and another was injured when a car crashed into a tractor trailer on a Midlands road, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 3:10 p.m. Monday in Lee County, according Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

A 43-year-old Sumter resident was driving a 2020 Chevrolet sedan north on Rembert Church Road when it crossed the center line and side swiped a southbound 1986 International tractor trailer, Ridgeway said.

Both drivers were hurt and taken to an area hospital, where the person who was behind the wheel of the Chevy died, according to Ridgeway.

The Lee County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Chevy driver.

Further information on the condition of the truck driver was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the Chevy to veer into oncoming traffic was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Dec. 19, at least 1,015 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least nine people have died in Lee County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, six deaths were reported in the county, according to DPS data.
