Pedestrian killed when hit by two cars on Midlands road, SC cops say
One person is dead after being hit by two cars on a Midlands road Wednesday night, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The multi-vehicle collision happened at about 9:30 p.m. in Calhoun County, according to Lance Cpl. Nick Pye.
A pedestrian was walking east in the westbound lane of Sweet Bay Road, Pye said. That’s near St. Matthews, in the area between Interstate 26 and U.S. 21.
A 2012 Toyota sedan and a 2012 Infiniti sedan were driving west on Sweet Bay Road, and near the intersection with Sunny Plain Road, when both cars crashed into the pedestrian, according to Pye.
The pedestrian was taken to a hospital in Richland County and later died, Pye said.
The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.
Pye said neither of the drivers were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
The collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 68 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,075 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least two people have died in Calhoun County crashes this year, DPS data shows. Last year, four deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
