A South Carolina man was killed when the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a tractor trailer, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said.

Chance D. St. Clair, a 37-year-old Aiken resident, was the motorcycle rider who died, Coroner Darryl Ables said.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 11:10 a.m. Thursday, according to Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

St. Clair was driving a 1998 Honda motorcycle north in the 1500 block of U.S. 1/Columbia Highway North when it collided with a southbound 2021 Peterbilt tractor trailer that was turning left onto a private driveway, Tidwell said. That’s about a mile and a half from Aiken High School.

St. Clair died at the scene, according to Ables.

There was no information on whether St. Clair was wearing a helmet. An autopsy will be performed in Newberry, the coroner’s office said.

Tidwell said the truck driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through Feb. 5, at least 68 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,075 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least four people have died in Aiken County crashes this year, DPS data shows. Last year, 28 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
