Midlands woman killed in crash where car flipped over, SC officials say
A Midlands woman was killed Sunday in an early-morning car crash, the Sumter County Coroner’s Office said.
Kanisha Temoney, a 25-year-old Lee County resident, died in the accident, Coroner Robbie Baker said.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 7:15 a.m. on U.S. 15 in Sumter County, according to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Temoney was driving a 2016 Honda coupe north on U.S. 15 near the intersection with Biddle Road when the car crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road, Ridgeway said. The car then hit an embankment and flipped over, according to Ridgeway.
Temoney died at the scene, Baker said.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if Temoney was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the Honda to veer off the road wasn’t available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Temoney’s cause of death is still under investigation and an autopsy is scheduled for later this week at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Through Feb. 5, at least 68 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,075 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least two people have died in Sumter County crashes this year, DPS data shows. Last year, 29 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
