One driver killed, another injured in head-on crash on Midlands road, SC cops say
One driver was killed and another was injured Wednesday morning in a head-on crash on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 5:45 a.m. in Fairfield County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller.
A 1999 Honda Civic was driving west on S.C. 34 near the intersection with Mood Harrison Road when the car crossed left of the center line and hit an oncoming 2012 Dodge Heavy Duty pickup truck in the eastbound lane, according to Miller.
The Honda driver died, Miller said.
The Fairfield County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Honda driver.
The Dodge driver was injured and taken to an area hospital, according to Miller. Further information on the pickup driver’s condition was not available.
There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing seat belts.
Miller said there were no passengers in either vehicle, and no other injuries were reported.
Information about what caused the Honda to veer into oncoming traffic was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Monday, 110 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,075 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least three people have died in Fairfield County crashes this year, DPS data shows. Last year, nine deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
