24-year-old driver killed in crash on Midlands road, SC Highway Patrol says
A driver was killed in a crash involving a pickup truck on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Natyvious Deveon Griffin, a 24-year-old Newberry resident, died in Thursday’s crash, the Saluda County Coroner’s Office said.
A two-vehicle collision happened at about 12:15 p.m. on U.S. 378/Columbia Highway, according to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the Highway Patrol.
Griffin was driving a 2007 Honda Accord and had stopped for the stop sign at the intersection of Mt. Willing Road and Columbia Highway, Bolt said. After entering Columbia Highway, the car collided with a westbound 2016 Dodge Ram 3500 towing a trailer, according to the coroner’s office.
The pickup did not have to stop at the intersection.
Griffin died at the scene, the coroner’s office said.
Bolt said the pickup driver was not hurt and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing seat belts.
The collision is being investigated by the coroner’s office and the Highway Patrol. Along with the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office, the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office, Saluda County EMS and Saluda County Fire Service all responded to the wreck.
Through Feb. 26, at least 125 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,081 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least two people have died in Saluda County crashes in 2023, according to the coroner’s office. Last year, two deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
