One driver killed, two more hurt in multi-vehicle crash on Broad River Road, cops say

One driver was killed and two others were injured Wednesday in a multi-vehicle crash in Richland County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The five-vehicle collision happened at about 12:45 p.m. on Broad River Road in Columbia, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.

The driver of a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck died in the wreck, which also involved a Chevy Tahoe SUV, a Ford Edge SUV, a Ford Taurus and a Mercedes-Benz sedan, according to Bolt.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pickup driver.

Both SUV drivers were injured and taken to an area hospital, Bolt said. Further information on their conditions was not available.

Bolt said the occupants of the cars were not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if any of the people involved in the collision were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the wreck was not available, but it continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 153 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,081 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 10 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 67 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
