Three dead after car crashes into house, SC officials say

Three people were killed Saturday when a car crashed into a house, South Carolina officials said.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about noon in Spartanburg County, according to Master Trooper Gary Miller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A 2007 Mercury Montego was driving south on Sunset Avenue and ran off the right side of the road near the intersection with East Blackstock Road where it crashed into a home, Miller said. That’s in the Roebuck area, between Interstate 26 and U.S. 221.

The driver and one passenger in the car died at the scene, according to Miller.

Miller said a second passenger was taken to an area hospital. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office said that second passenger, 69-year-old Linda Kay Vaughn, died at the hospital about five hours after the crash, WYFF reported.

The coroner identified Donnie Edge, 64, as the driver and Amber Edge, 33, as the passenger who died at the scene, WHNS reported.

There were people inside the home, but they were not hurt, according to Miller, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if any of the three people in the Mercury were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the car to veer off the road and crash into the home was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through March 26, at least 197 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 17 people have died in Spartanburg County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 59 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
