Pickup hits pole, flips over and crashes into trees, killing driver, SC cops say

One person was killed Sunday when a pickup truck hit multiple objects in a late night crash on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 11:30 p.m. in Clarendon County, Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway said Monday.

A 26-year-old Sumter resident was driving a 2009 Chevrolet pickup west on Loss Brook Road, according to Ridgeway. That’s in the Manning area, between Interstate 95 and S.C. 260.

The Chevy ran off the right side of the road and hit a utility pole, causing the pickup to flip over before it crashed into trees, Ridgeway said.

The driver died at the scene, according to Ridgeway.

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Chevy driver.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through March 26, at least 197 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least five people have died in Clarendon County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 15 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
