It’s only a short stretch of road, but closing it for the weekend could cause delays, traffic jams and headaches for drivers traveling through the area in Columbia called Malfunction Junction.

That’s why the South Carolina Department of Transportation is warning drivers in advance that the ramp on Interstate 20 westbound at Exit 64B will be closed for days. That’s the junction with Interstate 26 west.

The highway exit will be closed at 9 p.m. on Friday, and is scheduled to reopen by 6 a.m. Monday, SCDOT said in a news release.

Drivers “are advised to use caution and plan accordingly in case of delays,” SCDOT said Wednesday.

A detour will be set up this weekend, providing a more circuitous route for drivers who would normally use the exit. Drivers should:

  • Take Exit 64A onto I-26 east toward Charleston
  • Then stay in the far-right lane
  • Next take Exit 107B onto I-20 east toward Florence
  • Then stay in the far-right lane
  • Finally take Exit 64B onto I-26 west toward Spartanburg

The temporary closure will allow contractors to perform ramp tie-in construction for the Carolina Crossroads Phase 2 project, according to the release.

Phase 2 will reconstruct the interchange at Broad River Road and I-20 (Exit 65) to improve traffic, SCDOT said. The project will also lengthen access from I-20 westbound onto I-26 westbound to minimize traffic congestion, according to the release.
