Multiple highway lanes closed after crash near Malfunction Junction
Drivers making the Wednesday morning commute on a major highway in Columbia were delayed by a crash in the area called Malfunction Junction.
All of the eastbound lanes on Interstate 20 were closed because of the wreck near Exit 63, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. That’s in Lexington County, near the line with Richland County, and is the junction with Bush River Road.
The crash happened at about 7:45 a.m., according to SCDOT.
Information about the cause of the crash, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available. Traffic cameras showed emergency vehicles responding to the scene.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety did not say if anyone was injured in the crash.
Vehicles were backed up for about 5 miles as drivers negotiated their way through I-20, traffic cameras showed.
Information about when the lanes would be reopened and the scene would be cleared was not available. Drivers in the area were urged to use caution and be patient.
