Driver killed in crash on busy Richland County road is identified by coroner

One person was killed Wednesday night in a car crash in the Columbia area, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Totheyona N. Brown, a 30-year-old Sumter resident, died following the crash, the Richland County Coroner’s Office said Thursday.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 6:30 p.m. in Richland County, according to Cpl. Tyler Tidwell of the Highway Patrol.

Brown was driving a 2009 Honda Civic west on Garners Ferry Road, Tidwell said. Near the intersection with Piney Branch Road, the Honda ran off the left side of the road and flipped over, according to Tidwell.

That’s in Eastover, not far from McEntire Joint National Guard Base.

Brown was the only person in the Honda and died at the scene, Tidwell said. No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if Brown was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the Honda to veer off the road was not available, and there was no word if the crash remains under investigation.

Through Sunday, 346 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 18 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 67 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
