Driver killed in Lexington County crash that significantly hurt others is identified

One person died and two others were hurt when a car crashed into several trees in Lexington County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened June 3, but the death was reported by the Highway Patrol Monday.

Kimberly Renae Davis, a 41-year-old Pelion resident, died seven days after the wreck, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Tuesday.

At about 7 p.m. on June 3, Davis was driving a 1998 Volvo sedan north on Hartley Quarter Road and ran off the left side of the road near the intersection with Creek Ranch Road, said Lance Cpl. William Bennett. That’s in the Pelion area, not far from U.S. 178.

The car crashed into multiple trees, according to Bennett.

There were three people in the car, and all of them were taken to a hospital in Richland County, according to Bennett. That’s where Davis later died, Bennett said.

Fisher said the passengers suffered significant injuries, but further information on their conditions was not available.

Davis was wearing a seat belt, according to Fisher, but there was no word if the passengers were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available. Fisher said her office and The Highway Patrol are continuing to investigate the crash.

Through Sunday, 439 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 15 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 43 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
