Driver dies after crash with pickup truck on Midlands road, SC Highway Patrol says
More than a week after a car and a pickup truck crashed, the driver of one of the vehicles died in a Richland County hospital, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened on June 26 in Saluda County, said Cpl. Tyler Tidwell. The death of the driver of a 2023 Nissan Sentra was reported Monday by the Highway Patrol.
At about 10 p.m. on June 26, the Nissan was driving east on U.S. 178 when it collided with a westbound 2014 Chevrolet pickup, according to Tidwell. After the crash, both vehicles ran off the road, and the Nissan driver was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital, Tidwell said.
The Saluda County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Nissan driver.
There was also a passenger in the Nissan, but the Highway Patrol did not say if that person was injured.
Tidwell said the Chevy driver was the only person in the pickup and was not hurt. No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if any of the people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.
Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available, but the wreck remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 505 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least six people have died in Saluda County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, two deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
