A busy Midlands intersection will be closed for days because of a water main break, according to the Irmo Police Department.

Wednesday marked the second day that the intersection at Lake Murray Boulevard and St. Andrews Road was blocked as repairs are being made on a broken water main, police said.

That’s near the Irmo Station Shopping Center, which is anchored by a Kroger supermarket, and is a main thoroughfare for residents of the New Friarsgate subdivision. The intersection is about a mile from Exit 102 on Interstate 26.

The intersection was initially shut down Tuesday after a water main ruptured, and completely blocked by about 8 p.m., police said. There was no word about what caused the damage to the water main.

Because the repairs to the water main and the roads are so “extensive,” police said the intersection is expected to remain closed throughout Wednesday and into Thursday.

Information about when the repairs will be completed and when the intersection will be reopened was not available.

Police said traffic is being diverted around the intersection, but they asked drivers to “avoid this area all together if possible.”

“Trust us on this one, your patience and sanity will be tested,” police said.
