Columbia man killed in motorcycle crash is identified by Richland County coroner

A fatal motorcycle crash involving one man near Interstate 77 and Percival Road is under investigation, the Columbia Police Department said Sunday.

Herman E. Main III, a 39-year-old Columbia resident, was killed in the accident, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Monday.

The police department, which was called to the crash shortly before 10 p.m., closed the area Saturday night around Percival Road while the department’s traffic safety unit investigated.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about the details of the crash were not available.

There was no word if Main was wearing a helmet.

Through Saturday, 789 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 44 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 67 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
