Driver killed in crash just blocks away from hospital in SC, Highway Patrol says
One person was killed Wednesday night when a car and motorcycle collided, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 7:15 p.m. in Florence County, said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.
A 2023 Yamaha motorcycle was driving east on U.S. 76, and near the intersection with Old Mars Bluff Road, it collided with a 2016 Chrysler 200 that was crossing the highway, according to Butler.
The motorcycle rider died after being taken to an area hospital that’s about a mile from the crash scene, Butler said.
The Florence County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the motorcycle rider.
Butler said the Chrysler driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet, or if the Chrysler driver wore a seat belt.
The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Tuesday, 777 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 16 people have died in Florence County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 39 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
