One person killed, four hospitalized when car and pickup truck crash, SC cops say
One person was killed and four others, including a juvenile, were hospitalized following a Tuesday night crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:35 p.m. in Bamberg County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.
A 2000 Toyota pickup truck was driving north on S.C. 61 and at the intersection with U.S. 78 it collided with a 2018 Nissan sedan, according to Bolt. The car was driving east on U.S. 78, Bolt said.
Both drivers were injured and taken to an area hospital, according to Bolt. Two passengers in the Nissan, including a juvenile, were airlifted by helicopter to another hospital, Bolt said. Further information on their conditions was not available.
Another passenger in the Nissan died, according to Bolt.
The Bamberg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the passenger who died.
Bolt said the driver was the only person in the pickup, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what led to the collision was not available, but it continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Monday, 928 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least six people have died in Bamberg County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. There were two deaths reported in the county in 2022, DPS reported.
