22-year-old woman dies in hospital after overnight crash, South Carolina coroner says
A South Carolina woman was killed Saturday in an early-morning crash, according to the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.
Meagan Hudson, a 22-year-old Sumter County resident, died in what Coroner Robbie Baker termed an accident.
The single-vehicle crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Pinewood and Wedgefield roads in Sumter, Baker said in a news release. Further information about the wreck was not available.
Hudson was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital, where she died, according to the release.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word on whether Hudson was the driver or a passenger. Information about seat belt use was not available.
Both the coroner’s office and the Sumter Police Department are continuing to investigate the accident. An autopsy will be performed Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.
Through Nov. 3, at least 817 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 19 people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 30 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
