Traffic from Columbia to be affected as busy highway exit will be closed, SC officials say

Work continues on the Carolina Crossroads Project to improve the traffic flow in the area of Columbia known as Malfunction Junction, and the latest change means temporarily closing a well-traveled highway exit, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

For multiple days, drivers heading from Columbia on Interstate 126 westbound won’t be able to use the off-ramp to Colonial Life Boulevard, SCDOT officials said Tuesday in a news release.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday, the exit will be closed for construction, according to the release. Specific information about the construction was not available.

This closure is expected to last until Friday morning, SCDOT officials said.

As part of this closure a detour will be put in place, according to the release.

Drivers heading west on I-126 and looking to access Colonial Life Boulevard will be diverted at Greystone Boulevard. Traffic then will head left on Broad River Road before reaching Colonial Life Boulevard, at the junction with Bush River Road, according to the release.

“SCDOT asks that drivers slow down and pay attention to signs and crews when driving through the work zone,” officials said in the release.

This move is one of many that are part of the Carolina Crossroads Project, to change and improve traffic in the area near the line between Richland and Lexington counties where there’s a junction for I-26, I-126 and Interstate 20, according to SCDOT.
