21-year-old South Carolina man killed in crash with tree, Lexington County coroner says

A Midlands man was killed Saturday when the truck he was driving crashed into a tree, South Carolina officials said.

Mason Leffel Reusch-Fulmer, a 21-year-old Lexington resident, died in what Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher called an accident.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 3 a.m., said Cpl. Nick Pye of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Reusch-Fulmer was driving a 2020 Dodge pickup truck south on Summerland Avenue in the Leesville area, according to Pye. Near the intersection with Lodestar Road the pickup ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree, Pye said.

Reusch-Fulmer, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, according to Fisher.

Pye said Reusch-Fulmer was the only person in the pickup, and no other injuries were reported.

Information about what caused the pickup to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through Dec. 1, at least 885 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 47 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 45 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
