Driver killed when car runs off I-77 and crashes into sign, South Carolina cops say
One person was killed Thursday in an early morning crash on a section of Interstate 77 in the Midlands, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 1:05 a.m. in Lexington County, said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.
A 2015 Lexus IS 250 was driving north on I-77, according to Butler. At the 2 mile marker the car ran off the right side of the interstate and crashed into a traffic sign before flipping over, Butler said.
The driver died at the scene, according to Butler.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
Butler said the driver was the only person in the car, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the car to veer off I-77 was not available, and Butler did not say if the crash remains under investigation.
This was the first traffic-related death in Lexington County in 2025 after more than 948 people died on South Carolina roads last year, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
At least 50 people died in Lexington County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
