New exit that will connect I-20 with I-26 set to open in area called Malfunction Junction
Another milestone in the Carolina Crossroads Project to improve the traffic flow in the area of Columbia known as Malfunction Junction will take place this week.
A new exit ramp that will connect drivers on Interstate 20 with Interstate 26 will be opened Thursday, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Information about the time the new exit will be opened was not available, but it will happen late in the day, according to a Tuesday afternoon news release from SCDOT.
All traffic heading west on I-20 will utilize the new exit onto I-26 west that’s in the area near the line separating Richland and Lexington counties. The new exit will be closer to the junction with Broad River Road than its predecessor, according to a map shared by SCDOT.
There currently are no changes for eastbound drivers on either of the interstates.
With the new exit opening, the previous exit connecting I-20 west to I-26 west will be permanently closed, according to the release.
As part of this traffic change, overhead signs near the Broad River Road overpass will direct drivers where to exit using the new ramp.
This move is one of many that are part of the Carolina Crossroads Project, to change and improve traffic in the area where there’s a junction for I-26, I-20 and Interstate 126, according to SCDOT.
Anyone seeking more information about the closure and other updates, can go to the project webpage, or call 800-601-8715.
“Carolina Crossroads is one of the largest construction ventures in South Carolina’s history, followed by the Ravenel Bridge, and will alleviate the most congested portion of the Midlands’ interstate system,” SCDOT said.
