Teenager killed when car crashes into trees and goes down embankment, SC cops say
A teenager was killed Sunday when a car ran off a South Carolina road and crashed into trees, according to the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office.
Deymius Mack, a 17-year-old Great Falls resident, died in what Coroner Chris Hill called an accident.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 6 p.m. in Fairfield County, said Cpl. Nick Pye of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Mack was driving a 2014 Chevrolet sedan north on U.S. 21, according to Pye. Near the intersection with Wateree Road the Chevy ran off the left side of U.S. 21 where it crashed into multiple trees and then went down an embankment, officials said.
Mack, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, according to Hill.
Pye said Mack was the only person in the Chevy, and no other injuries were reported.
Information about what caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine Mack’s cause of death.
Through Sunday, 52 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
This was the first person who has died in a Fairfield County crash in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 10 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
