Driver killed in crash that left another person hospitalized, South Carolina cops say

One person was killed and another was injured in a crash on a Lexington County road near the start of the Wednesday evening commute, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The three-vehicle collision happened at about 4:50 p.m., Master Trooper William Bennett said Thursday.

Both a 2016 Nissan sedan and a 2019 Kia sedan were driving west on Old Dunbar Road, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with McCall Street a 2019 Honda SUV that was driving east on Old Dunbar Road collided with the Nissan before then crashing into the Kia, Bennett said.

The Honda driver died at the scene, according to Bennett.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Honda driver.

The Kia driver was hurt and taken to an area hospital, Bennett said. Further information on the Kia driver’s condition was not available.

Bennett said the Nissan driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if any of the drivers, who Bennett said were the only people in their respective vehicles, were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the wreck in the area between Columbia Metropolitan Airport and Interstate 26 was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 145 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least six people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 50 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
