South Carolina woman killed in crash is identified by coroner’s office

One person was killed Tuesday in a car crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Brenda Johnson, a 71-year-old Ridgeway resident, died in what Fairfield County Coroner Chris Hill called an accident.

The collision happened at about 2:25 p.m. in Fairfield County, said Cpl. Nick Pye of the Highway Patrol.

A pedestrian, later identified as Johnson, was walking north across S.C. 34, near the intersection with Jewel Drive, when she was hit by a 2008 Dodge sedan that was driving west on S.C. 34, according to Pye. That’s in the area between U.S. 321 and Interstate 77.

Johnson was flown to Prisma Health Richland hospital when she died from her injuries, Hill said.

Pye said the driver, who was the only person in the Dodge, was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through Sunday, 158 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least three people have died in Fairfield County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 10 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
