Driver killed in overnight ATV crash on South Carolina road, Highway Patrol says

One person was killed early Sunday morning when an ATV crashed on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 12:45 a.m. in Clarendon County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

A 2007 Can-Am ATV was driving west on Bill Davis Road, according to Ridgeway. Near the intersection with Bald Eagle Road the driver lost control of the vehicle and the ATV spilled into the road, Ridgeway said.

That’s in the Summerton area, near Lake Marion and Interstate 95.

The driver died at the scene, according to Ridgeway.

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the ATV rider.

There was no word if the driver was wearing safety restraints or a helmet, but the crash continues to investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through March 30, at least 158 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least four people have died in Clarendon County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were nine deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
