Stretches of one of the busiest highways in the Palmetto State will soon be reduced to a single lane as roadwork is planned for parts of Interstate 26, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

Westbound lanes on I-26 will be blocked for more than a month in multiple locations in Newberry County, SCDOT said Monday in a news release.

The closures will happen so bridge repairs can be made over the Palmetto Trail, at mile marker 83, and over Indian Creek, at mile marker 65, according to the release.

The repairs will begin April 28, and the lane closures are expected to last until the end of May, SCDOT said.

“Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes, if possible,” SCDOT said in the release.

Additionally, a detour will be set up for vehicles that are wide loads exceeding 10 feet in width, according to the release. Those larger vehicles will have to exit I-26 at S.C. 202 and follow the signed detour route, SCDOT said.

SCDOT asks that drivers slow down and pay attention when driving near the work zone.

On Monday, SCDOT announced neighboring Saluda County also will be affected by bridge repairs. SCDOT said it will close and detour the S.C. 121 bridge over Big Creek in Saluda County for repairs beginning April 14. The repairs are expected to be complete by the end of the month, according to SCDOT.
